Open interest against price

Each 4-hour step in the recorded history (up to 30 days) falls into one of four combinations. How often each happened:

0 %  Open interest up, price up0 of 1 steps · usually read as new longs
0 %  Open interest up, price down0 of 1 steps · usually read as new shorts
0 %  Open interest down, price up0 of 1 steps · usually read as shorts closing
100 %  Open interest down, price down1 of 1 steps · usually read as longs closing or liquidated

How to read open interest

Open interest counts open positions, so it rises when traders add leverage and falls when they take it off. It is measured in XRP here, so a price move alone does not change it. Swiftedge records it itself from on-chain exchanges, so the history starts when recording started and covers up to 30 days. On its own it does not say who is long or short; for that, look at the long/short ratio and funding, and at the liquidation heatmap, which estimates where open positions would be forced out.

FAQ

What is XRP open interest?

The total size of open XRP perpetual futures positions. Every long has a short on the other side, so each position is counted once. On this page it is measured in XRP, which means it changes only when positions are opened or closed, not when the price moves.

What does rising open interest mean?

New positions are being opened, so more leverage is building up. With a rising price it is usually read as new longs, with a falling price as new shorts. These are common readings, not rules: open interest alone does not say which side opened.

What does falling open interest mean?

Positions are being closed, voluntarily or through liquidations. A sharp drop in a few hours usually comes with a burst of liquidations; see the liquidations page for what actually happened.

Why is the total lower than on other sites?

This page adds up the XRP perpetual futures on on-chain exchanges; the table above lists them. Other exchanges and other kinds of futures are not included.

How often does it update?

Every 5 minutes. Swiftedge records open interest itself from on-chain exchanges, so the history starts when recording started and covers up to 30 days, in 4-hour steps.
