Each 4-hour step in the last 30 days falls into one of four combinations. How often each happened:

27 %  Open interest up, price up49 of 179 steps · usually read as new longs
21 %  Open interest up, price down38 of 179 steps · usually read as new shorts
24 %  Open interest down, price up43 of 179 steps · usually read as shorts closing
27 %  Open interest down, price down49 of 179 steps · usually read as longs closing or liquidated

Largest 24-hour rise in the period: +6.5 % (to 21 Oct, 16:00 UTC). Largest 24-hour drop: -6.0 % (to 24 Sep, 12:00 UTC). Large drops usually line up with liquidations.

How to read open interest

Open interest counts open positions, so it rises when traders add leverage and falls when they take it off. It is measured in BTC here, so a price move alone does not change it. On its own it does not say who is long or short; for that, look at the long/short ratio and funding, and at the liquidation heatmap, which estimates where today's open interest would be forced out.

FAQ

What is Bitcoin open interest?

The total number of BTC futures contracts that are open. Every long has a short on the other side, so each position is counted once. On this page it is measured in BTC, which means it changes only when positions are opened or closed, not when the price moves.

What does rising open interest mean?

New positions are being opened, so more leverage is building up. With a rising price it is usually read as new longs, with a falling price as new shorts. These are common readings, not rules: open interest alone does not say which side opened.

What does falling open interest mean?

Positions are being closed, voluntarily or through liquidations. A sharp drop in a few hours usually comes with a burst of liquidations; see the liquidations page for what actually happened.

Why is the total lower than on other sites?

This page adds up the USDT-margined BTC perpetuals on Binance, Bybit and OKX. Coin-margined and USDC contracts, other exchanges and CME futures are not included.

How often does it update?

Every 5 minutes. Current open interest comes from each exchange's public API; the 30-day history uses 4-hour steps.
