FAQ
What is a gold liquidation?
When a trader uses leverage on a gold perpetual and the price moves against them, the exchange closes the position by force once the margin is used up. That forced close is a liquidation. It happens as a market order, so it pushes the price further in the same direction.
What is the difference between a long and a short liquidation?
A long liquidation closes a leveraged buyer, so the exchange sells (shown in orange). A short liquidation closes a leveraged seller, so the exchange buys (shown in cyan).
Where does the data come from?
The public liquidation feeds of Binance (XAUUSDT), Bybit (XAUUSDT) and OKX (XAU-USDT-SWAP), the gold perpetual futures quoted in USDT; one contract is one troy ounce (OKX: 0.001 oz per contract, converted to ounces here). Binance only publishes the latest liquidation per second, so in fast cascades its numbers are lower than the real total. OKX and Bybit send every liquidation.
Why are there liquidations when spot gold is closed?
The perpetual trades 24/7. While spot gold is closed (weekends, the daily break, holidays) it keeps trading, so positions can still be liquidated. It is usually quiet.
Is this a liquidation heatmap?
This page shows liquidations that really happened. A liquidation heatmap is an estimate of where future liquidations could sit, based on open interest and assumed leverage. Ours is the gold liquidation heatmap, checked against the liquidations on this page.
